Pediatric Dentistry and Special Needs Dentistry

The Division of Pediatric Dentistry and Special Needs Dentistry at Kyushu University is a top of the department of pediatric dentistry that is the base not only for Kyushu but for Western Japan. Through collaboration with related fields including medicine and dentistry, we have the highest track record in Japan in the number of pediatric dental treatments performed under general anesthesia, and in research we are conducting research into tooth development and the onset of genetic diseases, as well as regenerative medicine research in the field of dentistry using iPS cells and dental pulp stem cells. In terms of clinical education, there is a curriculum for obtaining a pediatric dentistry specialist as part of postgraduate training, and it is an environment where anyone can step up in stages. We are always playing a central role in the field of pediatric dentistry both in Japan and overseas, for the sake of children and for nurturing young talent who will lead the dental world in the future.

Message to students

Pediatric dentistry differs from other medical fields in that it is classified according to the age of the patients it targets, not the content of the treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to acquire all the skills in dentistry, and medical knowledge as well as dental knowledge are required. It also plays an important role in the prevention and management of dental diseases such as caries. There are concerns about a decline in population due to the declining birthrate, but due to changes in living environments in which people are trying to raise each child with care, the rate of pediatric dental visits is also increasing. We are the “first dentist” for children, and this is a field that has the potential to greatly change their image of dentistry.
