We belong to Laboratory of Oral Pathology, that is a field of basic life scientific research, but are engaged in pathological diagnosis, education, and research as follows.
Pathological diagnosis: We diagnose about 1,200 cases of pathological specimens and about 50 cases for operative rapid pathologic diagnosis submitted from the Dental Hospital of the Kyushu University Hospital for a year. We also take part in cytodiagnosis of the oral lesion. In addition, we participate in the CPC (Clinico-Pathological Conference) at the Kyushu University Hospital and neighboring hospitals.
Education: Pathology and Oral Pathology refer to the medical specialty concerned with the causes, mechanisms, and effects of diseases mainly based on the structural/functional changes of the organs, cells and so on with diseases. In the undergraduate education (3rd grade), we give live lectures for Pathology and Oral Pathlogy and instruct their histopathological practices with the use of light microscopy to understand causes, mechanisms, and effects of diseases.
Research: Our main research project is to investigate common mechanisms between developmental formation and tumor formation. It is unique that the origins of the project are based on histopathological findings during pathological diagnosis. We also use various experimental systems that mimics in vivo condition such as embryo organ culture. In this way, all of us strive to develope and improve the dental and medical examinations/therapies with the motto of “from diagnosis to research, and from research to diagnosis.”
