In our department, we provide education focusing on perioperative anesthetic management for dental and oral maxillofacial surgery. In clinical practice, we provide anesthetic management for patients undergoing dental and oral maxillofacial surgery, especially for pediatric patients and physically and/or mentally handicapped patients. Airway maintenance is one of the most important factors in perioperative anesthetic management. In dental anesthesia, however, the operative field is often overlapped with the airway. Nasal intubation, therefore, is often required, and we should pay attention to unexpected difficult airway cases. Therefore, we are conducting clinical research on airway management, including anatomical background.
In addition, we research lifesaving protocols for critical accidents during dental surgery based on the current situation of actual dental office. In particular, we have proposed a method of external chest compression using a stable dental chair to stabilize the chair for cardiac arrest occurred during dental surgery. Our method has been adopted as a guideline by the European Resuscitation Council.
We also research the perioperative nutritional management to improve prognosis by focusing glucose metabolism management by using artificial pancreas.
