Japan currently has the world’s largest super-aging society. As we age, our lifestyles invariably change. Without adapting to these changes, we may experience a decline in activity and motivation and lose interest in our oral health, thus we become more susceptible to various diseases. As we age, maintaining oral health becomes increasingly important. With cardiovascular diseases becoming more commonplace in older adults, preparing the oral environment for cardiac surgery can help prevent intraoperative and postoperative infections as well as ensure adequate postoperative nutrition. Complications in oral health, such as stomatitis and taste disorders, may be the result of anticancer drugs and radiation therapy.
The Department of Geriatric Dentistry and Perioperative Medicine in Dentistry aims to support the oral health of Japan’s aging population by providing effective dental care so that aging adults can maintain their quality of life (QOL) and focus on their daily lives and treatment. Our mission is to contribute to advancing the dentistry for aging and sick populations through undergraduate clinical education, clinical research, and a wide range of clinical activities in hospital settings.
