Application for the Problem-Solving Oriented Training Program for Advanced Medical Personnel Sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology

Reforming Dental Education to Contribute to Creating a Society in Which People Enjoy Long and Healthy Lives

Faculties of dentistry at national universities with a solid record of achievement will cooperate with faculties of dentistry and distinctive departments of dental surgery at private universities that have schools of medicine, working in partnership with medical-related faculties at each university to build a system of collaborative medical and dental education that adds a new dimension to the field and eliminates the vertical hierarchies between them.

Moreover, they will make this system accessible nationwide. In addition, in collaboration with both the Center for Death & Life Studies and Practical Ethics and the Institute of Gerontology at the University of Tokyo, they will introduce education concerning death and life studies and integrated community care.

Furthermore, with the cooperation of the Tokyo Metropolitan Geriatric Hospital and Institute of Gerontology and the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology, the participating universities will systematize and provide access to the latest knowledge concerning dementia and other conditions, as well as the way in which dentistry addresses these. The outcome of this initiative will be the cultivation of primary care dentistry that is capable of caring for patients in clinical, nursing care, and end-of-life care settings, underpinned by an appropriate perspective on life and death. Moreover, it will foster dental care that can address needs during the acute phase, convalescent phase, and maintenance phase, and in home nursing care settings, contributing to general health via oral care. Furthermore, this initiative will promote new dental education and research aimed at promoting health, avoiding the need for long-term nursing care, and preventing infirmity by focusing on the dietary needs of elderly people.
